Organizational capacity strengthening

TAAC approaches capacity in three ways:

  1. Institutional,
  2. Collaboration, and
  3. Technical.

Institutional capacity

TAAC targets both critical organizational management and leadership functions of the organization, as well as how well it delivers in performance for its clients and funders.

Strength of collaboration

How strong or weak a given collaborative is, depends on the facilitation, transparency and norms of the Collaborative. Strength of collaboration is a key ingredient to the effectiveness of a Collaborative in generating results. TAAC supports either mature Collaboratives or those who struggle with trust to assess, strategize and improve the culture for working collectively.

Data literacy and effective use

Even when high quality data exists about the health status of a population, civil society often lacks the knowledge, tools to access, ability to analyze, understand and use these data. In other contexts, data is unavailable, incomplete, or of poor quality. A key area of TAAC’s technical capacity support involves many aspects of data literacy and use. Our goal is to foster a culture of systematic data use for all advocacy and accountability actions.

Technical capacity

Our experience working with Collaboratives has shown that local civil society organizations have both deep knowledge of their contexts and the communities they serve. However, they may lack expertise in specific health content areas or methodologies to address policy processes, engage decision-makers, understand public financing or other crucial health system functions. To address these challenges, TAAC conducts technical capacity assessments and facilitates co-creation of a plan to identify and source tailored solutions for priority gaps. Furthermore, our work spans a wide range of health priorities, including maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), family planning and sexual and reproductive health (FP/SRH) including for adolescents and youth, Gender, WASH, and Nutrition. Historically, TAAC possesses and has applied a range of proven tools to support Collaboratives to meet their technical gaps. This toolkit is made available to all TAAC members.
